As this halt of life passes by,
until I wither away in some far day,
in the cherished memory of love,
I pray as if washing the shrine clean.
This love is worthy of worship, the highest love.

A man speaks about the woman he loves the way a devotee speaks about a temple. From the very first line he calls his own heart a “city of love,” and he is careful to say it is not just some ordinary lane of passion. The difference matters to him. He is not describing a quick attraction. He is describing something he wants to enter slowly and reverently, the way a pilgrim travels a long road just to stand in a sacred place. When he asks “where is that holy place of loving-kindness,” he is half longing, half searching, as if the love he feels is a shrine he has not yet been allowed to reach.

The middle of the song turns the woman into an offering on an altar, and this is where the Sinhala imagery is doing its quiet work. Her blue eyes glowing in youth, a golden flower blooming on a swaying branch, these are not just compliments on her looks. In Sinhala devotional language, light, flowers, and fragrance are what you bring to a deity. So when he lights “the lamps of my eyes” and burns “sandalwood incense in my heart,” he is performing puja, the temple ritual of offering, except the offering is his own gaze and his own heart, and the smile he lays at the altar is golden, the most precious thing he has. He is worshipping her without ever touching her.

The last verse opens out to the whole span of a life. He calls living itself a “halt,” a brief stop on a longer journey, and he knows that one day he will wither and fade. Even so, he says, he will keep praying in the memory of this love, washing the shrine clean the way a faithful person tends a holy place day after day. The closing line says it plainly: this love is worthy of worship, the highest love there is. What stays with you is the gentleness of it. There is no demand here, no chasing, only a man who has decided that loving someone purely is itself a form of devotion, something to be kept sacred for as long as he lives.
