A man well past his own youth has fallen for a girl much younger, and he knows exactly how that looks from the outside. He calls her his little rose, then in the very next breath calls himself the aging bee at her flower, the prince she would never see even in a dream. That admission, made before the song has properly begun, is the whole song.

The bee and the flower is one of the oldest pairings in Sinhala lyric, the lover drawn to the beloved the way a bumblebee is drawn to a bloom. Usually that bee is young and bold. He adds one word, aged, and the picture turns soft and a little sad. He isn’t chasing her. He is just telling her where he stands.

Both verses are built the same way, and the shape is the point. If she were a moon in a dark sky, he would love to say out loud the poem he has kept to himself, and if she chose to set and go, he wouldn’t hold it against her. If she happened to wander past his small place, he would love to leave the window shutters open, and if she never came, he wouldn’t be angry about that either. Every wish he makes, he cancels the claim on it in the same line.

The moon is where the imagery does its work. A moon on a dark night is something you can look at as long as you like and never touch, and it leaves on its own schedule, not yours. He has already accepted both halves of that. The open shutter says the same thing in a plainer way, a small house, a window left unlatched all night, no one obliged to walk past it.

What stays with you is that repeated “I won’t mind.” He asks for nothing except the chance to have said it once. Sung gently, without a trace of bitterness, it lands as the kind of love that has stopped expecting anything back and still hasn’t gone anywhere.
