Thani Tharuwe Lyrics
Thani tharuwe... thani tharuwe...
Obath ohoma othen inna
Mamath mehema methen innawa
Thani tharuwe... thani tharuwe...
Nethanga nethanga petali petali
Muwaga muwaga alali alali
Methek durak ek wi pemini
Thani tharuwe.... thani tharuwe...
Ma hada arane lathewi lathewi
Randen bariwa igili igili
Magen iwatha adila senase..
Thani tharuwe....
Thani Tharuwe Lyrics English Translation
Lone star… lone star…
You stay just like that, right where you are
And I stay here, just like this
Lone star… lone star…
Eye to eye, our glances tangling, tangling
Lip to lip, trembling, trembling
Across all this distance we came together
Lone star… lone star…
In the wilderness of my heart, aching, aching
Unable to settle, it flew off, flew off
Pulling away from me, it found its peace…
Lone star…

Thani Tharuwe Song Meaning and Interpretation
A man looks up at a single star alone in the night sky and talks to it as if it were the person he loved and lost. That is the whole frame of this short, quiet poem. He tells the star to stay where it is, far away up there, while he stays down here where he is, the two of them fixed in place and unable to close the gap between them.
The middle of the song is the memory of when they were close. He remembers eyes meeting eyes, glances getting tangled together, lips trembling near lips, the small breathless details of two people falling for each other. The line “across all this distance we came together” carries the ache: they had come from so far apart and somehow found each other, which makes what follows hurt all the more.
Then the song turns. In the “wilderness of my heart,” a phrase that pictures his heart as an empty, overgrown forest, the love grew restless and could not stay. He uses the image of a bird unable to settle, flying off again and again, and finally pulling away from him for good. The cruel twist is in the last word: once it left him, it “found its peace.” The thing he could not hold onto only became calm after it was gone from him.
That is why he is left speaking to a star. The one he loved has become distant and unreachable, beautiful but out of reach, like a point of light he can see but never touch. The repeated call of “lone star, lone star” is really him talking to his own loneliness, telling the star and himself to simply stay put, each alone in their own place, because nothing can bring them back together.
