A man sits alone deep in the night, and instead of fearing the dark he finds a strange comfort in it. The moon has gone, the sky has clouded over, and yet he says there is no loneliness here. The reason is simple and tender. The one he loves has become his light. When he says “my light today is you, you alone,” he means it the way a Sri Lankan listener hears the moon and the stars in our songs, as the things that hold back the dark. With those gone, the person he loves now does that work for him.

From there the mood turns. The single comfort that life had given him feels as though it could shatter in one quick blow, like an arrow finding its mark. He looks at the love he holds and cannot understand why it no longer feels safely his, why it seems to drift, as if reaching toward someone else, someone closer. This is the ache of a person who loves deeply and senses, without proof, that what he treasures may not stay.

He answers that fear with quiet resolve. He has not given his heart to anyone else, and he is holding on with everything he has, gritting his teeth to bear the pain rather than let go. The last lines carry the weight of the whole song. He knows that one day the two of them will part, and that parting is sent off “in secret to the floor of the sky,” a soft and very Sinhala way of speaking about death, about being given over to the vast sky that takes everything in the end.

What stays with you is the calm in his voice. This is not loud heartbreak. It is the steady tenderness of someone who has already accepted that love and loss live side by side, who chooses to hold on through the dark night anyway, knowing it cannot last forever.
