A man is saying goodbye and walking away from a love he cannot hold on to. He says it gently, almost with grace, asking for leave to go the way you would politely take your leave from someone’s home. There is no anger and no bargaining. He has accepted that this is over, and the only thing he is allowed to carry out the door with him is the memory of her. That is where the whole song lives, in the quiet dignity of someone who knows he has lost and chooses to leave with his head up.

The moon does all the heavy lifting in this song. When he sings that her moon rose and shone and felt like light to him, he means she was the brightness in his life, the one who lit up everything around him. Then her moon set, the way the moon always eventually sinks below the horizon, and all that was left for him was the dark. In Sinhala song the moon is the standing image of a beloved’s calm, glowing beauty, and here it carries a second meaning too, that her light was never really his to begin with, only borrowed for a while like moonlight you can see but never own.

He spells that out in the last verse, and it is the saddest, truest part. The moonlight belongs to the world, the moon belongs to the sky. In other words, she was never his alone. Her beauty, her presence, her light were always meant to be shared with everyone, not given to him to keep. Against that he sets the dew, pini kadulu, which in Sinhala literally puts together the words for dew and for teardrops. The dew forms in the night, hangs on for a moment, then falls to the ground and is gone by morning. He asks why those drops bother to fall to this earth at all, and the question is really about himself: why give your heart to something that was never going to stay.

What the listener is left holding is that line, none of it was ever mine to keep. He is not blaming her and he is not pretending it did not matter. He simply understands, the way you understand a thing far too late, that some of the most beautiful light in your life is only ever passing through. He takes the memory, asks for leave to go, and walks out into the dark he now has to get used to.
