A woman is leaving the man she calls her lord, and she sings it the way you say goodbye when the choice was never really yours to make. The song opens on a storm: the sky thunders, lightning tears it apart, and in that same breath she says her heart has been widowed. She is not actually a widow. She uses the word to tell us that something inside her has died, that the love is over even while the man is still alive and standing in front of her. The storm outside is the storm in her.

The line she keeps returning to is the heart of the song. “Shut the door, my lord. If that is what you want, I will go.” She says it again and again, and each time it lands a little heavier. She will not beg, she will not fight. If he wants her gone, she will leave, and she puts the decision squarely on him by asking him to close the door behind her. There is pride in it and there is grief in it at the same time.

The images she reaches for are all about taking off and casting away. She speaks of laying down a crown of thorns, the weight and pain of a love that had stopped being a comfort, and of the golden chains tied around her neck, the marriage ornaments a Sri Lankan woman wears as a sign of belonging to someone. She unfastens them and flings them into the weeping sky. That gesture is everything: she is unmaking the bond with her own hands, giving back what tied her to him, and even the sky is crying along with her. Yet she does not leave with hatred. She says they loved each other for a while, and she is taking the sweet memories with her.

The last turn is the most tender. She says she will lay him to rest inside her dream and write a thousand small scribbled songs. Kurutu gee are the rough little verses you scratch out for yourself, not polished poems, just the private lines a heart keeps writing. She is telling him that even after she walks out the door, he will go on living in the only place that is still hers, her dreams, and she will keep singing him there.
